Definitions within Atheism
JUST THE FACTS
Tags: atheism, religion, atheist, facts, definitions
Atheism, in the broadest sense, is the absence of belief in the existence of a god. Other definitions couple this absence of belief with the conscious rejection of theism, as well as the belief in the nonexistence of God. It is the opposite of theism, the belief in one or more gods.
| | Implicit atheism is the absence of theistic belief without a conscious rejection of it. |
| | Explicit atheism is deliberate disbelief. |
| | Strong/Positive atheism is the explicit affirmation that gods do not exist. |
| | Weak/Negative atheism is an absence of belief in one or more gods, without the positive affirmation of belief in no gods. |
| | Practical/Pragmatic atheism (apatheism) is life as if there is no God, natural phenomena are explained without resorting to God, the existence of gods is not denied, but God neither provides purpose to life, nor influences everyday life. |
| | Methodological naturalism is the tacit adoption or assumption of philosophical naturalism within scientific method with or without fully accepting or believing it. |
| | Theoretical/Contemplative atheism explicitly posits arguments against belief in God that include psychological, sociological, metaphysical, and epistemological explanations. |
| | Epistemological atheism argues that people cannot know God or determine the existence of God. |
| | Logical atheism holds that various conceptions of God, such as the personal God of Christianity, are ascribed logically inconsistent qualities. |
| | Axiological/Constructive atheism rejects the existence of God in favor of a "higher absolute" such as Humanity. |

This is a useful list for atheists and those who converse with them. Many people, including some atheists are unaware of these distinctions. Comment by: Kylyssa
