Creating an environment at home for you to relax in is a great way to unwind after a crazy day at the office and running the kids around. Here are some things I have found that really take the edge off.
| | When you pour essential oils into your bath also add 1 cup of milk. It helps break up oils so they disperse through the water and coat your body evenly. Plus the milk with smooth yoru skin. (Spa Caudalie at Le Meurice, Paris) | | | For a versatile tonic, mix the juice of two limes with a liter of water. Use as a gentle facial toner; shine-boosting hair rinse after shampooing; a refreshing soak for tired, sweaty feet; and breath freshener. (helene Spa, Intercontinental Resort &Spa Moorea, French Polynesia | | | Trick your stress into disappearing by first mimicking it. Stand and hold your hands stiffly down by your sides, fingers pointing toward the floor, so you feel tension throughout your arms, shoulders and upper back. This is the "uptight position" - with which you're probably all too familiar! To transcend it, close your eyes halfway and bend your knees slightly. Begin breathing slowly and rhythmicallly. Next, shake your hands vigorously at your sides for 8 to 10 seconds, then gradually slow the movements to a stop. You should be standing at ease, both literally and figuratively. (Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort, San Luis Obispo, California) | | | make a power walk more powerful: Before setting off, take a breath, then suck in your lower abs without lifting your chest or moving your body. Keep breathing! Now try to pull in even further. Start walking. Release your abs after five seconds. Repeat the two-step contraction and release while in motion for a great core workout, plus an extra calorie burn. (The Spa at madarin Oriental, New York, New York City) | | | Soften and smooth your body all at once: Mix 2 cups of plain yogurt, which is hydrating and has skin-toning lactic acid, with 1 cup of oatmeal flakes, which exfoliate gently. Apply in circular motions then rinse. (Estrella Spa at the Viceroy Palm Springs, California) | | | Deep-conditioning hair without drips. Coconut oil is very hydrating, so you can lightly coat strands. Wiat 15 minutes, letting the aroma conjure up fantasies of beaches and boat drinks. (The Lodge & Spa at Cordillera, Edwards, Colorado. | | | Revitalize toes that have been squeezed into pumps all day by soaking a washcloth in hot water, rollling it and weaving it between your toes, the way a pedicurist uses a folded tissue so polished nails don't touch. Put your feet up and relax until the cloth cools. (BuffSpa at Equinox, New York City) | | | Lavender eye pillows are great to help you unwind and drift into sleep at bedtime - at least in theory. The problem is, they tend to slide off the moment you begin to relax. Instead simply tuck a few dried lavender buds directly into your pillowcase. (The Spa at Topnotch, Stowe, Vermont) | | | make this your last, tension-easing stretch of the day: Kneel on your bed, nees apart, top of feet flat on the mattress pillow in front of you. Sit back on heels as you lean forward, hugging the pillow. Round your back and let chest, shoulders and head melt into the pillow. (Tonic of Wellness program, Lindblad Expedition vessels | | | Antioxident-laden green tea is a darling of skin-care products, but you can treat your face to it for pennies: Keep a bottle of the brewed tea chilled, and after cleansing, use it instead of water to rinse away suds. (Chuan Spa Langham Hotel, Melbourne, Australia) | | | Yellow light creates a tranquil mood. Switch to a yellow lightbulb beside your bed, or keep your regular bulb and drape a yellow sarong or pillowcase around the shade. (Raffles Amrita Spa, Canouan, The Grenadines) | | | After a hard day, you want a glass of red wine and a bath. Combine them! Pour in a cup from that bottle that's been open too long. Vino reputedly has detoxifying effects, and a wine soak feels deliciously decadent. (Park Club Spa & Fitness Centre, park Hyatt Seoul, South Korea) |
