Animal Sex!
JUST THE FACTS
Tags: sex, animals, mating, techniques
Fidelity is far from the norm in the animal world. Here are five different mating styles.
| | Sea Lions A dominant male sea lion is a lot like Hugh Hefner. He sets up a phat pad — usually a beach on some remote island — ladies arrive, and he has sex with them all. This harem lifestyle is known in the animal world as polygyny. |
| | Bonobo Chimpanzees Just had a fight? Time for sex. Found some food? Time for sex. Bonobos use intimate contact to smooth all potential conflicts. Female on female, male on male, female on male, orgies...It's all good if you're a bonobo! |
| | Humans We practice social monogamy — commitment with some cheating. In a study of 185 cultures, anthropologists found that nearly 4 in 10 societies approve of having sex with someone other than your spouse. Statistics on adultery are notoriously slippery, but here in the U.S. it seems that at least 15 percent of married people cheat. |
| | Jacana Birds For this marsh-dwelling South American species, every night is ladies night! They're polyandrous: One female rules over (and has sex with) a bunch of males. |
| | Parasitic Flatworms Sure, there are animals that never ever cheat. Like...uh, let's see...hmm...oh yes, the flatworm Diplozoon paradoxum. Models of ethical behavior? Hardly. They simply have no choice. Male and female meet as virgin larvae, fuse, and stay that way for the rest of their lives. |
