Hot or Not? Biology Offers An Answer
INFORMATIVE
Tags: biology, attractive, science, DNA
There are many factors which go into whether a person is attractive or not, and some of them aren't nearly as superficial as you might think. Rather, some of them have been hardwired in your DNA for centuries. Here are a few of the common denominators that make an ideal mate.
| | Symmetry: particularly facial symmetry, is a huge factor. This, on a subconscious level, ensures that the subject is a carrier of strong genes not susceptible to mutations. There has also been evidence to support that people are more likely to be attracted to people with similar facial bone structure as them. |
| | Clear skin/Complexion: this is a factor which is consistent among almost all cultures in the world. |
| | Averageness: While this may sound like an insult, it is actually a very important factor in attractiveness. The idea is this: if every person's body type was converted to numbers, and you took the average of those numbers and then converted it back to body type, it would represent the ideal body type. The closer a person falls to the middle of this spectrum, the more attractive they are. |
| | Straight Teeth: Ideals on whiteness and shape are constantly in flux due to changing societal conceptions, but straightness has always been a factor. This is an extension of facial symmetry. |
| | Smell: While it is not a visual cue, all humans secrete pheremones in the biological hope they will attract a mate. These pheremones stand in opposition to "unattractive smells", such as bodily odor due to not bathing. |
| | Shiny, Healthy Hair: Sounds like a plug for a shampoo commercial, but it's true. It ensures good personal hygiene, nutrition, and well-balances vitamin levels within the body. Don't fret, ladies: the length of hair on men and women as an attractiveness factor varies from culture to culture. |
