Millions of viewers tune in each night to watch Stephen Colbert destroy his opponent on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report"- but how much do you actually know about him? Here are some interesting facts on political satire's goldenboy.

  •
  • Colbert first studied to be a dramatic actor, but was drawn to improv comedy, earning his first paycheck in comedy as Steve Carrell's understudy in Chicago's touring Second City troupe.
  •
  • As a child in South Carolina, Colbert was sensitive to America's condescending attitude toward southerners and worked hard to supress his southern accent. He studied television news anchors to model his speech intonations.
  •
  • Colbert is a self-professed science-fiction and fantasy geek. At an early age, he fell in love with the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien and became absorbed in the role-playing world of Dungeons and Dragons.
  •
  • Despite his popular features on The Daily Show such as "This Week in God" which cast a sarcastic light on religion, Colbert is deeply religious and teaches Sunday School. He has said that his devout parents taught him at an early age that it was appropriate to think critically about religion.
  •
  • Colbert voices one half of the "Ambiguously Gay Duo" animated shorts featured on Saturday Night Live. (He performs the voice of Ace, while Steve Carrell is Gary.)
  •
  • Colbert's performance at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Association dinner on was a defining moment in his career despite the cool immediate reaction it received. The room full of Washington elite, including President Bush, remained quiet through much of Colbert's sarcastic and pointed routine, and critics initially wrote off his performance as unfunny. However when the speech became an Internet sensation, ratings for The Colbert Report rose 37%, and political columnists soon acknowledged that it was likely the most important political event of the election year.
  •
  • The user name StevenColbert is banned from participating in Wikipedia, due to multiple calls Colbert has made on The Colbert Report for viewers to discrupt Wikipedia by posting false entries, most famously in July 2006, when he encouraged his audience to edit entries claiming wild fluctuations in the elephant population.
  •
  • Stephen Colbert, comic book star? Colbert has been featured in a cameo role in #15 of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and his character Tek Jensen is slated to have his own five-issue mini-series published by Oni Comics in Spring 2007.
  •
  • Colbert pronounces his name "Cole-bear," with the 'T' silent, though previous generations in his family pronounced the 'T.' His father would have preferred to drop it yet chose not to out of respect for his own dad. Stephen Colbert's father informed his children they could pronounce it any way they wanted, and Stephen chose to make the 'T' silent for a fresh start when he embarked on a performing career.
  •
  • Among Colbert's recent honors: named Person of the Year by the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorodo (2007); Speaker of the Year by the Cross-Examination Debate Association (2007); one of GQ's Men of the Year (2006); one of People's Sexiest Men Alive (2006); one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People (2006); three Emmy's for writing on The Daily Show (2004, 2005, 2006); and both the American Dialect Society and Merriam Webster named his invented word "Truthiness" their Word of the Year (2005, 2006).
