Who is the Worst U.S. President Ever?
PEOPLE
Tags: presidents, United States, George W Bush, politics, history
Al Gore and Jimmy Carter recently said that George W. Bush was the worst president in American history, but is he really. Here are a few other candidates for the title of "Worst U.S. President."
| | Franklin Pierce (1853-1857) - Despite his charming personality and good looks, Pierce made a lot of decisions during his term which were widely criticized. His popularity in the North declined when he showed favor for the Kansas-Nebraska Act, he repealed the Missouri Compromise and also reopened the question of expanding slavery in the West. |
| | James Buchanan (1857-1861) - Buchanan claimed secession was illegal but also claimed that going to war to stop secession was illegal. So what did he do? Nothing. His inaction concerning secession laid the foundation for the Civil War. |
| | Andrew Johnson (1865-1869) - Johnson, who was the first president to be impeached, made several missteps during his presidency including his vetoes of civil rights bills. Johnson also had a reluctancy to negotiate which made for political gridlocks during his term. |
| | Warren G. Harding (1921-1923) - As a result of several political scandals involving members of his cabinet, Harding is frequently refered to as one of the least successful presidents in U.S. history. Bececause of the Teapot Dome affair, Albert B. Fall, Secretary of the Interior, became the first presidential cabinet member to be sent to prison. |
| | Herbert Hoover (1929-1933) - Despite numerous efforts to combat the Depression, Hoover failed to stop the downward economic spiral that followed. That compounded with popular opposition to prohibition and poor skills in working with other politicians make Hoover a possible candidate for one of the worst presidents in U.S. history. |
