Andy Roddick is known for his fast serves and forehands. He also holds the fastest serve recorded in professional tennis, clocked at 155 mph (or 248.2 km/h). Well here is how you can serve just like him:

  •
  • The stance - He starts with his feet very close together. There's no other top player who does that. For him, it works really well.
  •
  • The toss - His toss is beautiful. One of the things I like about his serve most is he's very disciplined with his left arm. He keeps his left arm stiff and lays the ball up at 1 o'clock. He lays it up beautifully every time. You really can't tell from his toss what kind of serve he's going to hit because it's a beautiful toss. That's the key to any great serve ... you have to have a very disciplined and standard toss location. He has that.
  •
  • The movement - What he does, instead of going back and forth, he goes down and up so he can use his ground force acceleration. He drives up to the ball, gets a good shoulder turn, gets his hip forward and his shoulders around. Then he just explodes around. He keeps his left arm up a long time and goes up to it. He translates all that torque and power up through his body and into the ball. He explodes it and just keeps going. Then he's strong as an ox as well.
  •
  • Slow Motion Serve - Andy Roddick
  •
  • The strategy - The biggest thing is the placement of it. Everyone has their favorite serve. With his height, I'm sure he likes to serve out wide and up the T. If you could chart his aces, I'd bet you'd see a whole bunch out wide and up the T. He hits them both really well. What he does is he can hit it flat or with a little bit of spin at 128 mph, which is incredible.
  •
  • The second serve - The difference is the toss comes back closer and higher up. You thrust up into the ball instead of popping out. You accelerate just as fast, but you accelerate out. When he hits it well, it's nasty. And he can hit it so fast. He's hitting like a 110-mph kick serve. There's no one else that can hit it like that. He can do so much off it.
