These are five of the longest bridges that are under construction today.
| 1. | Hangzhou Bay Bridge - 22.4 miles long - 1,470 ft span - 2008 to be finished - in China It is the longest trans-oceanic bridge in the world, although it does not have the longest cable-stayed main span. The opening ceremony was held on June 26, 2007 with great domestic media publicity, though after the opening ceremony, the bridge would only be used for test and evaluation purposes and will not be available to ordinary public transportation, which is scheduled sometime in 2008. |
| 2. | Penang Second Bridge - 15 miles long - 2011 - Malaysia It will have two observation platforms with rest and service areas at the central span. They are designed to resemble pearls. |
| 3. | Incheon Bridge - 7.4 miles long - 2,625 ft span - 2009 - South Korea The Incheon Bridge is a bridge currently under construction with a cable stayed bridge section which will be the second connection of Yeongjong Island and Incheon in South Korea. It is due to open in 2009. The bridge is expected to cost over $ 1.4 billion |
| 4. | Sutong Bridge - 5.1 miles long - 3,570 ft span - 2009 - China The Sutong Bridge is a cable stayed bridge which spans the Yangtze River in China that is currently under construction. It will be built between Nantong and Changshu. It is currently due to open in 2009. With a span of 3,570 ft, it will become the longest cable stayed bridge in the world. Overall the bridge length will be 26,923 ft. Construction has been estimated to cost about $750 million. |
| 5. | Suramadu Bridge - 3.4 miles long - 2008 - Indonesia A bridge with cable-stayed section currently under construction between Surabaya on the island of Java and the town of Bangkalan on the island of Madura in Indonesia. It will cross the Madura Strait. The bridge will have two lanes in each direction plus an emergency lane and a dedicated lane for motorcycles. When complete in 2008, the 5.4-kilometer bridge will be the first land link between the two islands and the longest bridge in Indonesia. Construction was started on August 20, 2003. In July 2004, a girder collapsed, killing one worker and injuring nine others. Work on the bridge halted at the end of 2004 due to lack of funds, but was restarted in November 2005. The total cost of the project, including connecting roads, has been estimated at $320 million. |
